Hi
I was approved to begin Enbrel in October but because of invasive dental treatment I have been unable to begin until now. However I am concerned about starting it at this time of year as there are so many bugs about at the moment. Am I being paranoid or would it be better to delay until later in the year. The research I have studied seems to indicate that your are more at risk of a serious infection in the first six months of treatment. I wondered if any of you have any experience of Enbrel and could pass on any advise.
Happy New Year to you all
Sue

Hi Sue I have been on Enbrel for 21 months and have had no infections at all. Enbrel has changed my life so much. I would get started on it as soon as possible. If you do feel you have the start of an infection go to your GP right away. The sooner you get started the sooner you will see an inprovement in your condition. Hope Enbrel works well for you, it has for me. Happy New Year 2011. Joy

Hi Sue Do please take up the option of being treated with Enbrel as soon as possible. Who knows, in the current economic climate I feel it is always best to take the offer whilst it is there! If your consultant feels you need this drug now then that is the way forward. Yes you will be more prone to infection but that is not something that affects everyone and if it does it can easily be dealt with and antibiotics will be prescribed if required. I have been on Enbrel since 2004 and it has changed my life. I have taken it in combination with other drugs but the improvement and control of the disease has been significant. Apart from the feeling of well being knowing the progression of the disease is being slowed down is a huge psychological benefit. There are bugs about all year so ignore that and get started! Best of luck with it Lyn x

Hi All Just to keep you updated. I had my first injection of Enbrel last Monday and on Tuesday, my mobility had improved beyond belief. I can now walk without limping and I feel so much better. Thanks to all those who encouraged me to try it and I would recommend anyone who is offered it to try it. Obviously it is different for everyone but it is worth giving it a try if you are offered it. Wishing you all a good week Sue

Hi Sue Wonderful news! Great that you are starting to see a return in mobility so quickly. Remember not to overdo things now you are more able, so easily done when we feel better. Don't worry if you find a slight 'slowing up' as your body adjusts to the new drug, it will get better again! Hope the improvement continues; do keep us posted Lyn x

Reading your post with great interest Sue as I should be starting Enbrel on Thursday and like you I've been anxious bout whether to start or delay till life is less hectic. I must admit Lyn, I'd not thought of the aspect that NHS changes may alter what rheumys are able to prescribe. Thankyou for you excellent and very timely advice again! xx Ailsa
